After playing “what’s-the-most-difficult-pose-I-can-get-Toshiya-to-stand-in” and after the attempts to pose him with Damien (since I figured I ought to photograph Dami too, since I took the trouble to drag him along as well) I played with my depth of field.
I’ve determined that yes, I can get a nice blur effect with my camera … but the settings required to get this are so difficult to get aligned that it’s not worth it.  Besides, since I have to zoom I can only really do portraits this way … and it’s just not as interesting as my other stuff :/
But it looks tons better than fake photoshop blur.
